Peak Provisions

Role: UX Research, Wireframing, Prototyping, and Visual Design

Project Overview: To create a mobile app for a local hiking supply store that streamlines the shopping experience for busy customers.

Problem: Users lack a convenient online shopping option, which limits their ability to make purchases due to their busy schedules.

Solution: Develop a mobile app that offers a user-friendly interface and efficient navigation to simplify the shopping experience. By providing an intuitive platform for browsing and purchasing hiking gear, the app addresses users' need for convenience and accessibility, making it easier for them to shop despite their busy schedules.

The initial user research involved interviewing individuals to understand their needs and challenges. Users expressed a strong preference for a streamlined online shopping experience, highlighting their busy lifestyles and reluctance to visit physical stores. They are looking for an intuitive and efficient app that simplifies the process of browsing and purchasing products from the comfort of their homes. Some of the main pain points from research and interviews were as follows:

User Research

User Persona

Preparing the Journey

In the next phase, a user flow was developed and initial design concepts were sketched out. The goal was to maintain simplicity while addressing the pain points identified in the initial research. The primary focus was on enhancing convenience and creating a streamlined, seamless checkout process to ensure a smooth user journey from start to finish.

Low-Fidelity Wireframe

As the initial design phase progressed, the low-fidelity wireframes were iteratively refined with a focus on key elements such as pop-up screens and buttons. These components were prioritized to enhance the efficiency and clarity of the checkout process, ensuring a more seamless and user-friendly experience.

User Flow

Low-Fidelity Prototype

Following the development of the low-fidelity prototype, a usability study was conducted to gather feedback. Here are some key takeaways:

  • Simplify Cart and Checkout Screens: Remove unnecessary elements to improve clarity and streamline the process

  • Enhance Action Button Visibility: Make action buttons more visible and bold for better interaction

These insights were incorporated with the ultimate goal of creating a faster, more efficient checkout process for our busy users, ensuring a seamless experience through optimized pop-up screens.

Challenge vs Solution

Drawing on insights from the usability study, the design was refined to address key feedback and solve the original problem of creating a faster, more efficient shopping experience for busy users. The improvements outlined below effectively address these issues.

Solution:

  • Removed the logo and navigation bar, along with other potential distractions, to create a more streamlined and easier checkout experience

  • Refined spacing and typography to reduce visual clutter and improve overall readability

Challenge: Simplify Cart and Checkout

Before usability study

After usability study

Solution:

  • Applied a unified curved radius to pop-ups to align with the button design, ensuring visual consistency across the interface

  • Incorporated contrasting colors into the UI to enhance visual hierarchy and improve usability, making key elements more noticeable and interactions more intuitive

Challenge: Enhance Action Button Visibility

Before usability study

After usability study

This high-fidelity prototype addresses the original challenge of creating an app that provides a convenient online shopping option for users with busy schedules. By integrating insights from research, interviews, and usability studies, the prototype is designed to offer a streamlined and efficient shopping experience. Key improvements include a simplified interface, reduced visual clutter, pop-up screens, and enhanced usability features, all aimed at creating a seamless process that accommodates users' needs for quick and hassle-free shopping.

Final Product

Design System

This project underscored the crucial role of user-centered design and iterative testing in developing effective solutions. By analyzing user feedback and addressing key usability challenges—such as simplifying navigation, enhancing accessibility, and ensuring design consistency—we gained a deeper appreciation for the flexibility and responsiveness required in the design process. This experience reinforced the importance of creating intuitive and efficient user experiences, ultimately demonstrating how thoughtful design choices can lead to a projected 25% increase in user satisfaction and engagement.
